Aligners: The invisible braces

The methods in orthodontics are becoming more and more versatile in order to effectively treat misaligned teeth. This development also enables increasingly inconspicuous aids such as transparent braces or splints instead of visible brackets. They offer a suitable option, for example, for correcting minor misalignments of the front teeth in a particularly gentle and subtle manner and are therefore particularly suitable for everyday use by adult patients.

The “invisible” braces are also known as aligner system. Various providers such as Invisalign® and others work with this method.

Custom made braces for adults

To make the clear braces for adults, the teeth are initially digitally scanned by the dentist. The scans can then be used to create a 3D model of the patient’s teeth on the computer. As a result, the so-called treatment plan, on which the further procedure is based, is created and the expected course of the change in tooth position is shown.

By simulating the tooth movement into the desired final position, the individual stages between the initial and final position of the teeth can be identified. The individual stages form the basis for the invisible braces or splints. The big advantage is that the desired result can be viewed in advance and agreed with the patient. If the patient agrees to the treatment plan, clear braces will be custom-made for each stage of tooth movement.

Short treatment time and easy handling

The duration of treatment varies from person to person. In most cases it takes between 3 and 9 months to achieve the desired result. Depending on the duration of treatment and individual development, a different number of transparent braces is required.

Basically, each aligner splint must be worn for around 2 weeks and then replaced by the following one, so that a new brace is used for each phase of tooth movement. By continuously inserting the next splint in the treatment series, the teeth are brought into the desired position step by step. Ideally, the aligners are worn for 24 hours/day if possible.

It is necessary to visit your dentist in Zug at regular intervals to check your progress.

Advantages of clear braces

Since the clear braces are made individually for each patient and are not fixed as a removable splint, they are easy to use. Unlike fixed braces, as is usually the case in orthodontics for children is used, cleaning is unproblematic. You can brush your teeth as usual and don’t have to adjust to new circumstances. Here, too, the invisible braces have advantages compared to fixed braces: They can be easily removed when eating and drinking, which also makes oral hygiene easier. It also prevents unsightly discoloration on the teeth, which wearers of conventional braces sometimes suffer from due to less than optimal dental care. Misaligned teeth can be corrected gently and without annoying clips, screws or brackets using the aligner system.

However, not all misaligned teeth can be treated with this method. Likewise, transparent braces are not suitable for children who are changing teeth or teenagers.
